Case Study

Case 1: ideas for living well and doing good

It provides life tips for green life and well being, and introduces a chapter of activities that children and their parents can do together. There is a lot of information sharing on the national level of green life. (Your Daily Green, The Eco-Tipping Points Project, eco child play, Green-Rally, Green Village, etc.).

Case 2: Oxfarm- U.K.

Oxfarm was founded in 1942 during World War II to help the residents of Oxford, England, to provide aid to the Greek people suffering under Nazis. Afterwards, the group expanded its activities to become an international organization, taking the lead in the relief of war refugees in Belgium and elsewhere. Oxfam stores are run on a voluntary basis, serving as a public relations window for third world support projects, beyond simply creating profit.

Case 3: M7S(Marks & Spencer)and Waitrose (London, U.K.)

After the purchase, the issue of the community in which you live can be voted on in the donation and sponsorship box in front of the exit. Within the everyday markets, it is easy to get the citizens of each neighborhood to participate in the local issue.

Case 4: London and Seoul

We looked at overseas programs that are being implemented in harmony with child participation, the natural environment, and civic engagement. Among them, the case of SOUTHBANK CENTRE-LOUND was similar to our theme. SOUTHBANK CENTRE-London was offering a weekend afternoon environment around the Thames river to share culture and nature with family and children. The Seoul Metropolitan Government was also conducting a number of useful programs. Examples include the management of mobile libraries and the planning of an art courtyard to bring children and their parents together. However, these useful programs were not properly conducted without communication with Seoulites. So, how to address this lack of communication and lead to participation is an important goal in this project.

Categorization

Based on an understanding of global warming and citizenship, we first listed categories as specific targets to be addressed under the big theme 'A Good Citizen.'

Among the six categories, the family, of which the ‘children (preschoolers, infants)’ were set as the primary target.

Topic statement

A good kid in Seoul can expect such good results as growing up as a good Seoulites in the future.

The children have many possibilities because they are still learning.

Therefore, the social relationships they have should be considered -- we can think of parents, kindergarten teacher, and my friends who have the biggest influence on their learning.

If the relationship that influences children is fully considered and the children acquire a good culture through natural learning experiences, they will become the ideal future Seoulites, future parents and family.

Field Observation

Field observations mainly focused on the children's outdoor/indoor activities and were recorded using field notes, photography, videos, etc. The goal of the field observations was to understand the target user -- the children in their preschool-age 5-7 who live in Seoul.

To monitor the children's activities during weekdays, we visited kindergartens and homes and observed children's behaviours using shadow-tracking, and had brief interviews with caregivers.

To observe the children who spend their free time with their families on the weekend, we visited parks and zoos and conducted semi-structured interviews with children and their parents about Arctic habitats to learn about their understanding of climate change.

User diaries

As for user diaries, the mother of the child was asked to record their kid's daily life in a free format with a photograph. In addition, Shadow Tracking was also carried out together to observe a child's daily life close by. An observation was made by recording a simple field note. Field notes consist of simple comments about a situation, a user's activity, surroundings, interaction with the surrounding environment, user, and rough ideas.

Keywordization

We continued to keywordize the insights and group the keywords based on observations and secondary research. A total of seven defining categories could be derived for a child as a user. In the process of definition, we wanted to provide key concept with the characteristics of the child and their life in Seoul.

1) Idea Index

We identified the needs with seven definitions, arranged the ideas according to their needs with a brief sketch. We selected and embodied the final main idea after addressing the lack of communication and to guide participation.

2) Refinement

The idea to develop into a main one was "Seoul Dad, Winning Stars"
Seoul children feel the absence of their father. Economic fulfillment led to a lack of emotional fulfillment. The solution was to encourage natural communication with the child to solve these problems. In addition, it is not easy to find stars in Seoul at night these days due to global warming and air pollution. Especially, it is almost impossible to show starry night to children in Seoul. We started out with the idea of bringing back stars at night in Seoul by interaction with their father.

Design Idea

The absence of a father from Seoul is combined with the idea of participating in a Seoul green design, helping children in Seoul communicate with their father. Father picks up a star-shaped,luminous sticker attached to a subway wall or to an easily accessible spot and gives it to their child.

The child must turn off the lights to see the glow of star, which enables energy saving.

Star is also symbolic of dreams. As you pick stars, you can save energy. So, stars can shine in Seoul, children's dreams will grow bigger.

Informance

; a compound word for information+performance

It is a method of experiencing how user-centered design ideas can work to actual users) was performed with the design 'Seoul Dad, Winning Stars'.
Jamsil Station on subway line number 2 is the place where a lot of Seoul fathers can be observed especially in rush hour. It was held between 18:00 and 21:00 and could be divided into four parts by time zone.

Conclusion

The study looked for ways to improve the environment with two keywords: global warming and the participation of Seoulites.

The solution we have come up with in Seoul’s current issues are not direct instruction of actions but rather indirect solutions to natural causes of actions by drawing out a ‘good’ minds of Seoulites.
